From the Founders

Rhema Games, LLC is a faith-driven game company founded by husband and wife team Ben and Kalyn Flanagin. Ben’s experience in software and game development merges well with Kalyn’s experience in teaching, writing, and artistic direction.

Our vision for the company quickly expanded from making games to also creating a unique space for people to have fun together to also re-imagining arcade machines not merely for better technology and design but for a more connected and fulfilling social experience.

For many years, though, we’ve yearned to offer an educational program that teaches participants how to create games of diverse genres, mentors them through the process, and provides them a venue where people can play the games they create, as well as a reward when their games are played. This goal is still part of the Rhema Games vision.

Yes, this is a big vision. But it’s also a calling.

Push start - video game screen

The Arcade machine is an iconic fixture in video game lore. We could even say that, despite the recent resurgence of arcades in culture, they are still a thing of the past. Thirty years into the industry, we still use the original concept, which was limited by the technology of the arcade glory days and born out of necessity rather than careful design. What is surprising is that while the entertainment industry changed and the video game industry specifically has raced on, clearing level after level of advancements in hardware and software, arcades have not changed.

Today, we can throw away most of what was needed in the first through third-generation arcade cabinets and replace it with a much slimmer and sleeker design.

The most important level-up for the redemptive arcade is a re-imagined software system. Most arcade machines come “as is” and don’t receive software updates, which means if you want to have multiple games you need multiple machines. Our system allows the arcade owner to select which game is loaded and available on the machine at any given time, switching them out as new games are available or even setting up massive tournaments using every machine. Parents like to know what games their kids are playing. With our system (assuming they’re using our cards) certain games could be “locked” by parents, giving them peace of mind. Along with all of these built in features, shops could also put machines not being used at the moment to work by playing advertisements, announcements, or house music.
